Question

Answer

Where can I find details about the PhD course? The best starting point would be to follow the link to the PhD programme. If you have any further questions, which are not answered here, contact us, preferably using the form above or follow this link for other contact methods.
When should I apply.

Applictions for the course commencing in September 2009 will be accepted from November 2008.

What sort of qualifications should I have? Applicants must have or expect a good II(i) or 1st class degree in any area of the mathematical, physical, computer, engineering or life sciences (or equivalent EU/overseas degree).
How do I apply for the programme commencing September 2007?

We will be accepting applications for the course commencing September 2009 from November 2008 and a deadline date will be set soon according to the volume of applications. Go to the graduate application site for details on making an application. Please remember to send a copy of your application to us at CoMPLEX. (Please note if applying online that when chosing the course applied for you are given 2 options; the MRes component and the MPhil/PhD component. You should apply for the MPhil/PhD and will automatically be entered for the MRes.)

What form does the student funding take?

CoMPLEX studentships cover fees, materials and an annual stipend (currently £16005.00). All bar a couple of our studentships are funded by two Research Councils: the MRC and the EPSRC. Eligibility for funding depends on your status as either a 'home' student, EU student or 'overseas' student.
Most of our studentships (scholarship awards) are from the EPSRC/MRC and can only be awarded to students who have home student status. Your status is determined in accordance with the Education (Fees and Awards) Regulations (SI 1997, No. 1972) and subsequent amendments, as approved by Act of Parliament.
See the EPSRC site (annex 1, p19) for more details.
Please note that a recent change to the regulations gives home student status to EU citizens who have lived in the UK for 3 years prior to their 'relevant date', even if the purpose of the stay was for full time education.

O.K. I'm eligible for a research council studentship. How do I apply for one? Download the application form and submit it to the college admissions office. Again we emphasise that you must send a copy of your application to us at CoMPLEX. If you are offered and accept a place on the course and are eligible for a studentship you will receive a 4 year studentship. There is no need to fill in a studentship application form.
I'm from the EU, but not eligible for a research council studentship. Now what?

There are a limited number of studentships available for EU candidates living in the EU. If you submit a formal Graduate Application, the Programme Directors can make a determination as to suitability.

I'm not a 'home' student nor an EU student

You would then be classed as an 'overseas' student. There are two CoMPLEX/UCL scholarships available to overseas students. These cannot be guaranteed and they only cover tuition fees at the rate for UK/EU students (some £10000/year less than the fees for overseas students) and an annual £16005 stipend. If you submit a formal Graduate Application, the Programme Directors can make a determination as to suitability.

Candidates are advised to seek scholarships through their own national funding bodies.
Please see this UCL page for details on scholarships. Please note that as students are studying for an MRes in the first year of the course they are not eligible for scholarships which require MPhil/PhD study, such as the Graduate School Research Scholarship, Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Award and ORS award.
Advice on scholarships can be found through the British Council.
You should also look at the UCL site for international students, which not only gives details on funding, but also details other matters relevant to international students. Self-funded students are welcome to apply.

I'm confused about my status If you submit a formal Graduate Application, the Programme Directors can make a determination as to status.
What is an MPhil/PhD? All PhD students initially register for an MPhil. At the end of the first year they usually transfer to PhD status.
Can I just do the MRes course without the PhD? No. The two courses are linked. The MRes is a recognised post-doctoral research qualification and necessary for the PhD element of the course. We would not accept a candidate for other than the full four year course
English isn't my first language. You will need to provide recent evidence that your English language skills are adaquate for the programme. This link takes you to a page on the UCL applications site explaining English language requirements.
