CoMPLEX 4 year linked MRes/PhD course in Modelling Biological Complexity.

CoMPLEX runs an established interdisciplinary 4 year PhD programme. Its principal aim is to train students in collaborative research in the application of mathematical and physical techniques to problems in biology and medicine.

The current stipend is £16,005 per year.

Application Process

To apply you must fill in the official UCL graduate application form (html link). This can be done on line, or can be downloaded. Please return the form to Admissions as indicated, but do send a copy to as at busy times of year there can be a delay in applications reaching us from the admissions office.
During the course of the year the PhD programme committee will set deadlines for the receipt of applications. After the deadline has passed and all documentation has been collated for received applications they will be sifted and successful candidates invited for interview. The interview will last approximately half an hour and will consist of questions from a panel designed to establish a candidates interest in and suitability for the course. At the time of interview candidates will be advised when they will be informed of the result of the interview. Reasonable travel expenses will be paid.

Course eligibility

Applicants must have or expect to obtain a good II(i) or 1st class degree (or equivalent EU/overseas degree) in any area of the mathematical, physical, computer, engineering or life sciences. This year we expect to appoint around 12 Studentships (scholarship awards) which cover fees and stipend for the 4 years of the MRes/PhD course. Most of our studentships are funded by the EPSRC/MRC and are usually awarded to students who have home student status. Your status is determined in accordance with the Education (Fees and Awards) Regulations (SI 1997, No. 1972) and subsequent amendments, as approved by Acts of Parliament. All candidates are advised to check their status and their eligibility for UK Research Council Studentships. Full details can be found on the EPSRC site (see annex 1, p19). The final determination of applicant’s fee status rests with the UCL registry.

EU Students

We welcome applications from EU students. This year we can offer between 2-3 full studentships (i.e. fees and stipend) to EU candidates living in the EU, if they have met the relevant conditions (see links above). Each year, we have also accepted candidates onto the course who have funding from their home country.
Please note that due to a recent rule change, EU candidates who have lived in the UK for the 3 years prior to their 'relevant date' will be eligible for home student status (and are thus eligible for all studentships), even if the purpose of their stay was for full time education.

Overseas Students

We welcome applications from overseas students. Overseas based candidates are not eligible for CoMPLEX studentships, but can be accepted onto the course if they raise their own funds, through their own resources. Current fees for overseas students are £15,600 p.a. for the MRes and PhD. Please note that as the first year of the course involves study towards an MRes (years 2 to 4 constituting the MPhil/PhD element), applicants for the course are not eligible in the first year for general UCL scholarships which apply only to students pursuing an MPhil/PhD, such as the Graduate School Research Scholarship, ORS award and Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Award. Follow this link for details of UCL masters scholarships. We typically accept 1-2 overseas students onto the MRes course, and in most cases, these students have been successful in securing funding for the MPhil/PhD element of the course from a variety of sources.
