These are available to current undergraduate students (UK and international students) who will normally be entering the third or final year of their degree programme at the end of the summer. Students will be given desk space in the main CoMPLEX student room to allow interaction with other students already in the programme.
What types of projects are available?
Any project within the CoMPLEX remit involving at least one CoMPLEX contributor would meet the criteria. As with all CoMPLEX projects it must involve two supervisors, one from the physical sciences/ mathematics/ engineering and one from the life sciences.
What support is provided?
Studentships support a maximum of 8 weeks of work. This support will be divided into three parts.
1) A subsistence allowance of £175/week.
2) The cost of a standard return rail/airfare that is provided for students from outside London.
3) A sum of £300 will be contributed towards laboratory research costs.
How to apply
A one-page application should be made jointly by the student and their supervisors outlining the project. The application should be submitted to CoMPLEX (complex@ucl.ac.uk) giving a justification for the work being undertaken by the student and a summary of what the student will get out of project with regard to their career objectives.
Deadline
The deadline for applications is one week before the end of the spring term (June 2nd 2008). Decisions will be made shortly after the deadline date.
Criteria for decisions
Decisions are made on the basis of the project justification, the project’s value to the student, its contribution towards the aims of CoMPLEX and the student’s curriculum vitae.
Who will make decisions?
A committee appointed by the director of CoMPLEX (Professor Pomiankowski) ranks both the applications and the students. Projects with the highest ranking will be supported, subject to the availability of funds. Students will be notified shortly after the application deadlines.
After the award
Students are expected to write a one page summary of what they have achieved during the award period.
